How being specific in your goals will help in your job search

When starting out on any journey it’s important to know where you want to end up. Otherwise, you run the risk of it taking too long and wasting a lot of time.

This concept also applies to your job search.

Obviously, you should pursue roles that most fit with your experience and goals. The more specific you can be, the better. While this approach may appear like you’re excluding a lot of possibilities, you actually are concentrating your time and effort on the opportunities you have the best chance of winning.

Quality goals count more than quantity

It’s better to know your particular competency and own it.

This is especially key when you’re relying on networking in pursuit of your next role. Don’t fall into the trap of staying “open” in an effort to attract more opportunities. When someone considers recommending you within their network, they want to make sure you’re a good match to what their contact is looking for.

By being clear about who you are and what you’re good at, it puts a stake in the ground making it clear what your primary focus is. And this clarity conveys confidence. You signal that you only consider opportunities where you know you can add the most value.

Clearly communicate with recruiters

Being clear about what you want is especially important if you’re networking with recruiters. Recruiters are moving fast and generally don’t have time to help you figure out your next move. They need to know quickly who you are and what you’re capable of. This helps them sell you well to their clients. Any explanation that lacks specificity will likely lead to a pass on your candidacy.

So when approaching a recruiter or a networking contact, be crystal clear. Here’s an example:

I am a senior program manager with 12 years of experience in the automotive industry. I have a specialty in supply chain initiatives and prefer working in an established automotive company in the Detroit metro area.

With a description like this, your contacts will more effectively evaluate their network for those they know in this industry, geographic location, and business function. This may open up possibilities of expanded opportunities that are still close to your target. For example, a networking contact may not know someone at Ford but he could give you a great connection with a key parts supplier.

Wrap-up

Being able to communicate specifics of who you are and what you’re good at will lead you to opportunities that are right for you. Furthermore, you’ll come off more confident and be more memorable to your contacts for future opportunities and additional referrals. You’ll get to your final destination faster when you don’t waste time taking the scenic route in your job search.
